Stiebel Eltron helps support Solar Decathlon

Twenty teams have been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to compete in the 2007 Solar Decathlon. The teams, from colleges and universities around the globe, participate in an unparalleled solar competition to design, build, and operate the most attractive and energy-efficient solar-powered home. In fall 2007, the teams transport their solar houses to the National Mall in Washington, D.C., where they form a solar village.

The teams compete in 10 contests to determine an overall winner. Using only energy from the sun, the teams generate enough electricity to run a modern household. With an eye on energy efficiency, the students carefully choose the systems, products, and appliances used in their houses.

Stiebel Eltron is proud to support the University of Cincinnati's team. The University's School of Architecture is the first and only university from Ohio to compete in the Solar Decathlon. Stiebel Eltron will be donating a DHC-E 10 tankless electric water heater to be used as part of the solar thermal hot water system the team is creating.

We are excited to help support the University of Cincinnati and wish them and all the teams the best of luck in the competition! The knowledge that these students gain today lays a foundation for tomorrow's next generation of solar technologies.

Mini™ Tankless: featured green product in L.A. Times

Our new Mini™ tankless on-demand water heater was very well received at the recent International Builders' Show in Orlando, Florida this past February.

It generated lots of excitement and questions from industry professionals and the media alike. The Mini™ caught the eye of one L.A. Times reporter who was doing a feature about the multitude of new "green" products at the show. It was one of three products chosen for the article. Thanks for a great write-up ! The relavent excerpt follows below:

Mini On-Demand Water Heater

"Where is it written that hot water must be heated and then stored 24/7 in a big tank that needs a whole closet to itself? Those days are fast fading. On-demand systems, about the size of a breadbox, use electric or gas to heat water at the moment you need it and are increasingly replacing tank-storage systems. Now, German manufacturer Stiebel Eltron has taken the concept one step further with its new mini on-demand electric water heater, which is pretty cute at about 7 inches square and 3 inches deep. Though not big enough to fill a large tub with any efficiency, the new mini could provide hot water for a guest-bath sink or a wash-up area you've been considering for the garden shed. Stiebel Eltron's whole-house electric on-demand heaters are available online for about $400 with free shipping*; the mini costs less than $200. For more information, go to http://www.stiebel-eltron-usa.com , or call (800) 582-8423."

Stiebel Eltron's new North American headquarters is now solar powered too !

4.5 kW photovoltaic array

Stiebel Eltron is known for creating high quality products with a focus on the environment. So it’s no surprise that our commitment to the earth extends beyond our product line and into the way we do business every day.

Now that we are settled into our new location, it is time add more green to our building - besides the awnings !

As of November 2006, a 4.5 kW photovoltaic solar system will be supplying about 25% of the electricity used in our offices and warehouse. This is the second installation of this type that Stiebel Eltron has undertaken. A similar system is still in use at our previous headquarters.

A photovoltaic (PV) system converts sunlight directly into electricity without any pollution or noise.

Solar array on Stiebel Eltron's building

The supply of electricity from a PV system substitutes the electricity obtained from conventional sources such as oil, coal, gas, nuclear etc.

The system at the Stiebel Eltron facility is grid connected. It is able to supply electricity to the electrical grid when consumption is low in the building on weekends and holidays.

Stiebel Eltron manufactures solar thermal systems that can be used to provide water heating and space heating for homes and businesses.

The following links are available for more information on the Stiebel Eltron SOL 25 PLUS flat plate solar collector and the SBB storage tanks for solar applications.
